Training to enhance new skill sets among Journalists: Shuja-Ul-Haq

Srinagar, Mar 06 (KNO): In an effort to enhance and incorporate new skill sets of Data Journalism and newly incorporated web based applications for Journalists, Kashmir Press Club (KPC) in collaboration with Data Leads and Google News initiative (India Training Network) organised a ‘Data Boot Camp’ here in Kashmir Press Club Srinagar on Saturday. The workshop was moderated by Shivalee Khaushk of Data leads through virtual mode and Shuja-Ul-Haq President Kashmir Press Club (KPC), the session was virtually started by Data Journalist Anuja Venkatachalam who while presenting the different slides on Flourish and Pinpoint web application calibrated the Media men about the uses of these two empowering web applications. The Workshop witnessed the participation of around forty Journalists from different media organisations of the valley, after the registration link was thrown open by Kashmir Press Club for the participation in the training workshop. While talking about the Flourish and Pinpoint, Anuja, through virtual mode said, the web based applications empowers the Journalists to make a better visualisation of their stories using the data in graphical mode. “Pinpoint is a Web based application enriched with many Journalistic tools which majorly helps in transcriptions of Audio and Video interviews”, she said. The second half of the training/workshop was presided by Data Trainer Sanjit Oberoi who during his virtual presentation talked about the Common Mistakes being made during the Visualisation of the data Sanjit Oberoi, Data Trainer acquainted the journalists about the common mistakes in visualizing the data. The workshop also witnessed the question answer session during the training session, in which many Journalists asked different questions related to training and newly introduced web applications interfaces. Journalists while thanking the Kashmir Press Club (KPC) for the data training and workshop also urged upon the KPC Management to continue such training and workshops in the future so as the Journalists in this part of the world will also remain equipped with all new online web interface applications. General Secretary, Kashmir Press Club, Ishfaq Tantry told KNO that “we could have organised these events earlier, but due to the Global Covid-19 Pandemic lockdown situation all the events and programmes of KPC were deferred, however after the opening of activities around the world with proper SoPs and guidelines in place by WHO, we organised the training workshop under Covid-19 SoPs and Guidelines, in which due care was taken by maintaining the physical distance and use of masks was made mandatory while entering the training room.” On the culmination of training President Shuja-ul-Haq and General Secretary Ishfaq Tantry, thanked the Data Leads, Google News Initiative and Trainers for the conduction of the training workshop, and also promised to organise such events in the future—(KNO)
